November 06, 1932 - November 10, 2013

Baylus Cade Bramble, Jr., 81, lifelong resident of Fayetteville, NC died peacefully Sunday November 10, 2013 following a brief illness. He was born on November 6, 1932 at home in Haymount to the late Cade and Nettie Jones Bramble.

Baylus retired after 35 years of service with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina as head of agent recruitment for Eastern North Carolina. Even in retirement he continued to enjoy the insurance business by opening his own agency and remaining active until his untimely death.

Active in the life of his community, Baylus served on numerous boards and worked tirelessly for the betterment of healthcare, education, and service to others. He was the former chairman of the Board of Directors of Fayetteville Academy, was active in AHEC, Hospice, a Paul Harris Fellow in Rotary International and Cumberland County politics. During his tenure with Blue Cross he was called upon by the leaders of Cumberland County to serve out the unexpired term of Cumberland County Clerk of Court in the 1970’s. He decided not to seek elected office and returned to the insurance industry. He was a proud veteran of the US Navy serving four years during the Korean War on an aircraft carrier.

He was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church in downtown Fayetteville serving in every capacity on the local, state and national levels. He enjoyed singing and playing his trumpet, being honored as a lifetime deacon, the relationships with members of his Sunday School class and the many caring and loving members of his church family.

With all of that said, Baylus Bramble loved family above self. He was a gracious, giving and caring husband, father, grandfather, uncle and cousin. He married Martha Barefoot in Dunn, NC on October 17, 1959. Survivors include his precious wife Martha, daughters Jane Thorne (Bill) of Tarboro and Julia Shaw of Fayetteville, grandchildren Will Thorne of Durham, Cade Thorne Slepitza (Joseph) of Seabrook, TX, George Thorne of Chapel Hill and Martha Shaw of Fayetteville, his sister and brother-in-law Jennett and Blount Whiteside of Dunn, sister in-law and brother-in-law Pat and Ben Forbes of Wilson, sister-in-law Dorothy Jean Barefoot of Dunn, nine loving nieces and nephews and many extended family members.
