When your friend loses their pet

Published: February 28, 2020

It can be difficult to understand the emotional bond between pets and their owners especially if you are not a pet owner yourself. But the bond is real and runs deep. For those who have them, pets are fur family.

Whether their owner comes home from a five-minute errand or a week’s vacation their pet greets them like they’re the most important person in the world. Pets take the stress out of the most stressful day. They love their owner and those owners love them. When a pet owner loses their fur buddy, it’s a real emotional loss.

What they need from a friend is acknowledgement of the loss. Even if you don’t understand it, offer condolences. Be a good listener. Just as when a human dies people want to talk about the one who died. Remember, you aren’t expected to fix the pain. Avoid offering solutions like, “You can get a new cat.” Do ask how you can help.

Show your concern for your friend. Bring them food, some fresh baked cookies or some nice warm soup. This just shows you care. Send flowers or a card. Offer to help with removal of pet toys or bedding. Sometimes this is a difficult task for mourning pet owners.

Consider giving a gift of remembrance. Most funeral homes have jewelry that could be personalized to honor a friend’s fur family member. Some offer personalized candles, quilts or blankets. Call or stop in and ask about what the funeral home has available to honor people that might also be used to comfort a pet owner who has experienced a loss. Most importantly, accept the sadness and by all means give a hug.
