Estelle H. Norton, 84, left us on Tuesday, August 28, 2018, with her family by her side in her home in Fayetteville, NC.
Estelle was born December 20, 1933, in Whigham, Georgia to Fletcher Golden Teel and Cumi Estell Shirley Teel. Her father was a farmer and a chicken doctor in Whigham, Georgia before he passed away before Estelle was born. She had two sisters and 4 brothers who predeceased her, (Elease Teel McCorkle, Grace Teel Hammac, Lloyd Teel, William E. Teel, Kelley Teel, and James E. Teel). She attended school in Bradenton, Florida. She met and married Edgar Peveral “Peck” Carver in 1948. They were divorced in 1955 and Estelle moved to Fayetteville, NC with her two children, Linda Susan Carver Dixon and Ronald Eugene Carver, to live with her sister, Grace Hammac. It was there that she met Jessie Emerson Hendrix, Jr. and they were married in 1958. They had one son, Jessie Emerson Hendrix III. She worked as a bookkeeper for Winn Dixie for several years. When Harris Teeter came to Fayetteville, they asked her to be their bookkeeper, and she worked for them becoming front end manager. Mr. Hendrix passed away Oct. 9, 1972. She met John Daniel Norton in 1972 through her longtime friends, Elsie and Junior Lee. Estelle and Johnny were married in July 1973. He was a deputy with the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department. He passed away October 20, 1992. They had no children.
Estelle was a great seamstress and enjoyed gardening when she found time. She retired from Harris Teeter and lived her life to the fullest. Everyone she met loved her dearly. She enjoyed going to her church, Massey Hill Baptist for a long time. She loved all her church family and enjoyed going out with her Sunday School group to visit with others and for birthday lunches.
Her first son, Ronald Eugene Carver, predeceased her in 1998. Mrs. Norton is survived by her remaining two children, Susan Carver Dixon (John Anthony Dixon) and Jessie E. Hendrix, III (Tina Mitchell). She is also survived by her three grandchildren, Jamie Lee Schuler (Nate), Carissa J. Carver, and Ronald Jason Carver, and four great grandchildren, Anissa MeShea Carver, Ronald Ismael Carver, Harper Alyse Schuler, and Heidi Rose Schuler.
Estelle loved family and always considered all her nieces and nephews her own. She was the matriarch of the family. She loved going to the Shirley, Teel, and Carver family reunions, and meeting cousins and friends whom she had not seen since childhood. She traveled a lot with her daughter, Susan, son, Jess and granddaughter, Jamie to many of these reunions held in Florida, Georgia, and Alabama. Family meant the world to her. She was raised during the depression and always kept things that meant something to her for a long long time. Estelle spent her recent years at home with friends and family visiting and sitting with her. She enjoyed friendly chats with friends and family, dining, and shopping with her many friends and seeing her church family. Special to her to the end were her family and her adopted family, Marie Ray, Frances Newman, Lilly Kolbe, Pat Locklear, Gloria Douglas, and Gladys Blanton.
Funeral services will be Friday, August 31, 2018 at 11:00 am at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Lafayette Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday, August 30, 2018 from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm.
Estelle will forever be remembered by her family and friends.
