Mary McQueen MacPherson Spilman of Raleigh went to be with her Heavenly Father on Friday, February 15, 2019. Born in Fayetteville, NC, on March 14, 1929, she was the third daughter of Samuel Hinsdale and Mary (“May”) Doherty McQueen MacPherson. She was predeceased by an infant brother, Samuel Hinsdale MacPherson, Jr., and by two sisters, Elizabeth Wetmore MacPherson Coblentz, and Sue Harden MacPherson Tillinghast; and by her husband of 63 years, Theodore Louis Spilman, Jr.
She is survived by their children: Mary MacPherson Poole and her husband, Timothy Ray, of Raleigh, NC; Theodore Louis Spilman, III and his wife, Cynthia Ann Kelly, of Poway, CA; Emily Moon Spilman Everhart and her husband, Guy W., of Lexington, NC; and Samuel Hinsdale MacPherson Spilman and his wife, Karen Elaine McLamb, of Raleigh, NC.
Also surviving are grandchildren: Mary McQueen MacPherson Poole Lucas and her husband, Dylan James, of Raleigh, NC; Timothy Ray Poole, Jr., of Clayton, NC; Elizabeth Hahn Spilman, of Louisville, KY; Theodore Louis Spilman, IV and his wife, Kristen Kay Brewer of Vienna, Austria; William Douglas Spilman of Fort Hood, TX; Gaston Meares Randolph, III, of San Antonio, TX; and Rosemary Carolina Spilman, of Raleigh, NC. Surviving great-grandchildren are Adelyn Claire Lucas of Raleigh, NC; Tucker James Lucas of Raleigh, NC; and Theodore Louis Spilman, V of Vienna, Austria. A surviving sister, Frances Broadfoot MacPherson, is a resident of Roanoke, VA.
Mary was a graduate of Seventy-First School, Fayetteville, NC; Peace College, Raleigh, NC; and Queens College, Charlotte, NC. She had taught Weekday Religious Education in the Rockbridge County Schools, Virginia, and Bible in schools of Cumberland County, NC. For twenty-five years, she had taught first grade in Mary McArthur, Seventy-First, and L.E. Auman Elementary Schools in Cumberland County. She was a faithful member of the Auxiliary of the Gideons International for over fifty years, serving as past State President.
Graveside services will be held on Sunday, February 17, 2019 at 3:00 pm at MacPherson Presbyterian Church Cemetery. A Celebration of Life Service will follow in the church sanctuary. The family will receive friends following the service in the church parlor.
