Monserrate (Tatin) Howell, age 94, died peacefully at Johnston Health in Smithfield NC on Tuesday February 19, 2019. She was born in San Sebastian, Puerto Rico. Mrs. Howell was married to James B. Howell. She traveled the world as the wife of an Air Force veteran raising three children.
Though small in stature, if measured by her heart, she was a giant.
Tatin touched the lives of many children with love and compassion as a teacher for almost 30 years. She taught in the Department of Defense schools all over the world, but most loved her years at Fort Hill Elementary School in Dalton, Georgia.
She did not hesitate to provide guidance to her children and grandchildren regardless of age. Though they were not always the words one wanted to hear, they were from the heart and wise with her years.
Tatin is preceded in death by her husband, James, and her daughter, Martha Blake.
She is survived by her sons, James R. M. Howell (Kathy) of Atlanta, Georgia, Frank M. Howell (Dannielle)of Erwin, NC, and son-in-law, Lawrence (Willie) Blake of Fayetteville, NC. She is also survived by grandchildren, Michael Howell, David Blake (Meghann), Alex Blake, Robert Howell, Kelly Blake, James Howell, Rebecca Kishbaugh (Chris), John Howell, Heather Chouinard (Dennis) and Tiffany Howell. She was blessed to have 9 great grandchildren, Annabelle Kishbaugh, Brooklyn Blake, Lillian Kishbaugh, Jordan Sites, Lincoln Chouinard, Caroline Blake, Alexandria Arias, Charlotte Blake and Benjamin Withworth.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, February 23, 2019 from 1pm to 3pm at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow at 3pm in Jernigan-Warren Chapel.
Internment will take place in Whitfield Memorial Gardens, 710 W Cuyler St, Dalton, GA on Saturday March 2nd 2019 at 11:00am.
