Mrs. Alma Bass Rhodes, 91, of Fayetteville, passed away Thursday, Oct. 23, 2008, in Ashewood Estates in Sanford
Mrs. Rhodes was preceded in death by her husband, Robert "Bob" Rhodes, in 1986.
She organized and taught the deaf ministry and was a deaconess and the first female church treasurer at First Baptist Church. Mrs. Rhodes was secretary-treasurer for both the Cumberland County Association for the Blind and the Fayetteville Ladies Lions Club. She also taught sign language classes at Fayetteville Technical Community College and Fort Bragg. Mrs. Rhodes was a retired head bookkeeper for Methodist University.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight, Oct. 25, 2008, at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home in Fayetteville.
The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 26, 2008, in First Baptist Church on Anderson Street, with the Rev A. Edward Beddingfield Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Lafayette Memorial Park on Ramsey Street.
Mrs. Rhodes is survived by a son, Robert J "Dusty" Rhodes and wife Gail of Waycross, Ga.; two daughters, Ava Spivey and husband Mack of Sanford and Rose Thweatt of Fayetteville; four brothers, the Rev. Marion "Pete" Bass, Will Bass and Emerson Bass, all of Eureka, and Mack Bass and wife Betty Jo of Kinston; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
