Obituary

Retired Army MAJ Andrew "Andy" Thomas Nix, of Fayetteville, died Monday Oct. 26, 2015, in the presence of his family at the VA Nursing Home. Mr. Nix was born Aug. 8, 1925, in Aberdeen, MS, to the late Andrew and Jessie Nix. Andy, the youngest of three children, was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Sara Lawrence Nix (2013), and siblings Carlos and Pauline. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather. Andy is survived by his sons, retired Army LTC James Andrew Nix and wife Vicki, of Arlington VA, and Michael Thomas Nix of Fayetteville; son-in-law, Ronald Payne of Fayetteville, husband of Andy's late daughter, Virginia A. Payne (1943-1983); grandchildren, Deborah Pierce and husband Steve of Huntsville, AL, their seven children (David, Christina, Nathan, Jonathan, Rebecca, Jeremiah and Emily), and three grandchildren (Joshua, Natalie and Oliver); Edward M. Blackman Jr. of Aberdeen, and two children (Trey and Brett), and one grandchild (Cody); Kelly P. Walker of Fayetteville and two children (Dilles and Daphne); Donna P. Holmes of Hope Mills and child (Taylor); Andrea N. El Abbasy and husband Ahmed of Raleigh; Andrew P. Payne and wife Virginia of Terre Haute, IN and child (Zoe); and Sara A. Nix of Austin, TX. Andy, known as "PaPa" to most, was light-hearted with a great sense of humor. Marrying his sweetheart in their last year of high school, he soon began his life in the Army. A veteran of the military, Andy raised his family in various cities including Aberdeen, MS, Baltimore, MD, Birmingham, AL, Spartanburg, SC; and Verona, Italy. Andy served his country proudly in World War II and Korea and eventually retired to Fayetteville in 1968. After his military retirement Andy served another 20 years as a Civil Servant. All totaled, Andy's family has grown to seven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren, with another due in December. The family will receive friends from 12 a.m. to 1:00 Friday, Oct. 30, 2015, at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home in Fayetteville with a graveside service to follow at Cross Creek Cemetery with the Rev. Archie Barringer officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hemophilia of North Carolina, 260 Town Hall Dr. Suite A, Morrisville, NC 27560.
