FAYETTEVILLE - Mrs. Anna Powell Brewer, 90, of Fayetteville, died Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010, in her home. Mrs. Brewer was born March 17, 1919, in Duplin County, to the late Anna Bailey Maynard and Perry O. Powell. She was active in her support of civic and community affairs in Cumberland County. She was a retired elementary educator in Cumberland County schools, where she served for more than 30 years. She was chairman of the Cumberland County Democratic Party from 1981 to 1985. She was a longtime member of First Baptist Church and was a graduate of Meredith College in Raleigh. She was preceded in death by her husband, Judge Coy E. Brewer Sr.; a son, Douglas Tucker Brewer; and a sister, Grace Powell Johnson. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2010, in First Baptist Church, with the Rev. A. Edward Beddingfield Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Lafayette Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home in Fayetteville. Mrs. Brewer is survived by two sons, Coy E. Brewer Jr. and wife Patsy of Fayetteville and Christopher Powell Brewer and wife Jacqueline of Raleigh; a brother, Allan Powell of Deltaville, Va.; a sister, Catherine Powell Maultsby of Warsaw; and three grandchildren, Trey Brewer, Kerry Brewer and Delaney Britt Brewer. The family would like to thank the caregivers Jane Lennon and Lena Simmons for their loving care for and devotion to Anna Brewer during her last years.
