Anna Lee
"Pat" Garber
November 4, 1924 – January 7, 2016
Anna Lee "Pat" Carner Garber died peacefully on January 7, 2016, at Carolina Inn, where she had resided for the past 8 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, EC "Ed" Garber, her parents, Rev. and Mrs. W. Roy Carner, a sister, Nancy Carner Prehn, her eldest son, Lee Carner Garber, and a grandson, EC "Cy" Garber, IV. Pat is survived by her daughter, Amy Garber Byrd and a son EC "Ned" Garber, III, his wife, Caroline, three grandchildren-Ross Byrd, Anna Blue, Molly Garber, a great-grandson, Robert Blue, her daughter-in-law, Sharon Cox Garber, son-in-law, Trey Blue, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
As a devoted wife and community servant, Pat never forgot her humble beginnings in Glen Allen, Virginia. She attended Madison College in Harrisonburg, Va. and the Medical College of Virginia where she met her husband of 69 years. Her father, a Baptist minister and Chaplain in the US Army, influenced Pat's faithful service to Snyder Memorial Baptist Church after moving to Fayetteville in 1950.
As director of the Girl's Auxiliary program at Snyder Memorial Baptist Church, Pat influenced the lives of young women by her example and devotion to their spiritual growth. She was a member of the WMU, and was a well-respected Sunday school teacher. In 1968, she and her husband, Ed, served as volunteer medical missionaries to Nigeria for a period of 6 weeks.
An avid flower arranger and judge, Pat was a member of The Pine Needles Garden Club, the Fayetteville Chapter of Ikebana, and the Cape Fear Botanical Gardens. Her love of flowers and their natural beauty won her countless ribbons for her unique arrangements. Her talents were widely known throughout the state garden club circle and she was often asked to judge flowers at the North Carolina State Fair.
Pat enjoyed the company of her many friends and participated in many social activities. She was a member of Highland Country Club and was an avid golfer. Other memberships included The Supper Club, The Junior League of Fayetteville, the Study Club, and the Cumberland County Medical Auxiliary. Her countless contributions to these organizations were accompanied by her involvement as a past co-chair of the professional division of the United Way and past service to the Cumberland County Board of Social Services as a member and chair, and to the Fayetteville Family Life Center. As a full time homemaker, Pat set an example for her children by being actively involved in their activities and education.
When her own health began to decline, Pat made the decision to reside at Carolina Inn. She never complained and was always seen as one of the kindest and most cheerful residents with always a kind word. She was able to reside with some of her dearest friends. The family would like to thank all of the staff at Carolina Inn that assisted with her care and comfort before her death.
The Garber family would also like to thank Home Instead Senior Care, and Dr. Toni Meeks for their excellent care and compassion.
A memorial service will be held at Snyder Memorial Baptist Church on Sunday, January 10, 2016, at 3 pm. Visitation will be held in the church's Gathering Hall beginning at 1:45 pm. Burial will take place at a later date at Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, Virginia. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.
