Mrs. Becky Burke Akers, 66, of Fayetteville, died Thursday, Jan. 14, 2010, in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. She was a lifetime member of Gardners United Methodist Church. Mrs. Akers retired from Cape Fear Valley Medical Center after 23 years; prior to that she was employed with General Electric Credit Corp. for seven years. She also was a devoted Tar Heel fan. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Jan. 16, 2010, at 2p.m. in Gardners United Methodist Church with the Rev. Donald Stewart officiating. Burial will follow in Lafayette Memorial Park on Ramsey Street. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at the church. She is survived by her son, Jody Akers and wife Marlo of Spring Lake; daughter, Ronda Akers Sweet and husband Jon of Burke, Va.; brother, Tommy Burke of Fayetteville; sister, Sue Burke Kay of Fayetteville; four grandchildren, Ashley Akers Hughes and husband Aaron of Wilmington, Dustin Akers of Godwin, Steven Sweet of Burke, and Rebecca Sweet of Burke; and two great-grandchildren, Evan Hughes and Landon Hughes. She was preceded in death by her parents, Gladys Estelle Cameron and Joseph Thomas Burke Sr.; and sister, Josephine Gonzales.
