Mrs. Bessie Watson Smith, 81, of Lumber Bridge, died Saturday, Jan. 2, 2010, in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville. Mrs. Smith was a member of Gardners United Methodist Church and a member of the Louise Smith Sunday school class. She was a retired employee of Fayetteville Technical Community College. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert A. Smith; and a daughter, Barbara Carpenter. Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. today, Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2010, in Gardners United Methodist Church in Fayetteville, with the Rev. Donald Stewart officiating. Burial will be in Lafayette Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. today at the church. Mrs. Smith is survived by a son, Mike \\"Smitty\\" Smith of Lumber Bridge; a daughter, Linda Scott and husband Harvey of Fayetteville; grandchildren, Kenneth Carpenter and wife Ronda, Harvey Scott Jr., and Jonathan Scott; a great-granddaughter, Sadie Rose Carpenter; and a great-grandson, Logan Riley Carpenter.
