She served in the Army Nurse Corps for three years and retired after many years from the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Fayetteville, NC. After retirement, she was an active volunteer at St. Joseph's Episcopal Church for ten years and developed a strong concern for the homeless and underserved in our community. She established a small medical clinic, allowing clients to receive medical care along with personal care needs. In 1997, Betty was a co-recipient of the North Carolina Governor's Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service for work at the Homeless Day Center.
She was a lifelong Christian from the age of six and a member of Cedar Falls Baptist Church for 50 years, where she served as a choir member, Deacon, KIT Club member, and Shawl ministry member. She was the coordinator of the Bridge Ministry for fourteen years and a nursery worker for many years. She loved playing softball in the church league for many years. She loved her fellow Christians at Cedar Falls very much. She was noted for her good sense of humor, her cooking, and her ability to relate well with all people, seeing everyone as God's child. Her friendships knew no bounds relative to age, race, or religion. She formed close bonds with many diverse people. She loved all creatures, big and small, especially dachshunds. Above all, she loved the Lord.
