Obituary

Billie Aldred Alphin, 84, of Fayetteville died peacefully Saturday, May 30, 2015 at The Oaks at Mayview in Raleigh. She was born December 16, 1930 in High Point to Alice Maxwell Aldred and William Linville Aldred. Her father died prior to her birth and the family returned home to Raeford were she was raised. She attended Catawba Nursing School where she received her RN. She then completed her nursing education by receiving her BS from Duke University followed by graduate studies at George Washington University. It was while she was in Washington, D.C. that she met and married her first husband, William Rivington Potter of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. After his death in 1972, she returned to North Carolina, met and married her beloved husband of 40 years, Jerry Alphin. Over these 40 years, she was an active volunteer for numerous charitable organizations and served on the boards of many. In her later years she volunteered weekly at Cape Fear Valley hospital were she shared her kindness and generosity with patients and their families. She raised her family at MacPherson Presbyterian Church, where she was very active with Presbyterian Women and served as the church's first female ordained elder. After their daughters were grown she and Jerry together joined First Baptist Church were they were part of a wonderful faith community and developed many cherished friendships especially with their M & M Sunday School class. She was also an avid golfer and bridge player. She was active with the HCC Ladies' Golf Association and cherished her many golf friendships and especially loved her golf trips that included late night bridge games. She and Jerry were active in several social clubs, enjoyed traveling with close friends, and loved to entertain. In addition to her husband, Jerry, she is survived by her daughters, Beth Doucette and husband Michael of Lynchburg, VA; and Megg Rader and husband Robert of Raleigh; her grandchildren, Douglas McDonald and wife Marianne of Johnson City, TN, Maggie McDonald Garborg and husband Sean of Boulder, CO, Colin Doucette of Virginia Beach , Kate Doucette of Lynchburg, VA , Mary Stiles Rader of Boone, NC and Rob Rader of Raleigh; great grandchildren Maddie, Jon Michael and Christopher McDonald; and her beloved nieces and nephews Alice, Cindy, Bill, Danny and Pam Huss, Randy Walker and Wayne Walker and their families; and brother-in-law Harold Alphin. Billie's family is grateful for the love and care of the caregivers at Home Instead of Fayetteville, Dr. William Dunlap and the wonderful and compassionate staff of The Oaks at Mayview. A celebration of Billie Alphin's life will be held on Thursday, June 4 at 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Fayetteville. Visitation will follow the service.
