Mrs. Cecelia MacKethan Gambill, 92, of Fayetteville, died January 8, 2014 at Hillcrest Convalescent Center in Durham. A memorial service for Mrs. Cecelia MacKethan Gambill, 92, will be held Monday, Feb. 10, 2014, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of First Presbyterian Church of Fayetteville. The family will receive friends in the church parlor following the service. A private burial will take place at Cross Creek Cemetery.

Mrs. Gambill was born February 23, 1921 to Elisabeth Rankin and Hector McAlister MacKethan. She attended Salem College in Winston-Salem, NC and also attended The National Art School in Washington, DC. On September 16, 1941 she married Luther Gambill, a lieutenant stationed at Fort Bragg. They remained happily married until Lt. Colonel Gambill's death on April 18, 2000.
Mrs. Gambill was a life-long member of the First Presbyterian Church in Fayetteville. In 1983 she was given an Honorary Life Membership by the Women of First Presbyterian Church for her commitment and service. She served many years on the Mayor's Committee for Historic and Scenic Sites and also served on the Board of Blood Assurance. Mrs. Gambill was a charter member of the Thursday Club and an active member of the House and Garden Club. She was also a member of the Colonial Dames and extremely involved in preservation and restoration projects around Fayetteville, including Heritage Square and the Oval Ballroom beside the Women's Club. Mrs. Gambill was involved in the formation of Heritage Place and was a board member in its early years. As a co-founder of the Art League, Mrs. Gambill was well known for her prolific and exceptional artwork specializing in watercolor landscapes and flowers. In July/August, 2004 she was honored with the distinction of being chosen as the first "Featured Artist" for The Arts Council of Fayetteville/Cumberland County's new Featured Artist's Gallery where many of her paintings were displayed that summer. Mrs. Gambill was a true southern lady, the very epitome of grace and elegance. Her compassion and caring for others was most admired by all who knew her.
Mrs. Gambill is survived by a son, Thomas G. Gambill and wife, Lucia Welborne, of Chapel Hill; a daughter, Elisabeth Gambill-Niksich and husband, Gene Niksich, of Roswell, Georgia; a sister, Mary Rankin MacKethan Hayslip of Fayetteville; nieces Cecelia Hayslip of Wilmington and Elizabeth MacKethan; and nephews Leland Hayslip of Medford, NJ and John MacKethan of Washington, DC.
