Obituary

FAYETTEVILLE- Charles "Chuck" G. Steffen died and joined The Church Triumphant on June 22, 2015, in Fayetteville, NC at the age of 82. Chuck is survived by his wife, Marion, sons Kevin and Randy of Fayetteville, brother Larry Gutjahr of Wisconsin, six grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

Chuck was born on November 9, 1932, in Neosho, Wisconsin, to Wesley and Laura Steffen. He went to school at University of Wisconsin at Madison for architectural engineering. He married Marion Hustedt on February 18, 1956. After moving to Port Washington, Wisconsin, Chuck began working for Harnish Feger Homes as a draftsman. Over the next few years the couple welcomed two sons into their home. Kevin and Randy remember their father as a kind, hard-working leader of their family who loved and taught them about the outdoors.

Chuck was a member of the Our Redeemer Lutheran Church since 1965. His service to God was immeasurable through this congregation in just about every capacity possible. He followed the tenets of his faith and helped his neighbors in so many ways. One of those ways was to teach boys to become moral and upright men through Boy Scouts of America. He held various leadership positions in both the East Carolina and Kia Kima Districts of the Occoneechee Council including chairman of several committees. He had achieved the Order of the Arrow. However, his favorite times were spent working with the boys in the troops.

Chuck came to Fayetteville in 1965 to work for Barrett Builders. Chuck was head of the engineering department. He started Steffen Construction in 1974 which later became known as The Gutter man. Chuck worked with many people throughout the community through such organizations as Fayetteville Home Builders, Chamber of Commerce, and the Four Seasons Wildlife Club.

In 2000 Chuck was the recipient of a heart transplant. He and Marion worked tirelessly on the Donate Life Campaign with Carolina Donor Services to inspire others to donate life. The additional 15 years of life allowed Chuck to see his grandchildren to adulthood. Chuck, even at 82, became a donor. There is no age limit on organ donation.

The visitation with the family is scheduled for July 11, 2015, from 1 to 3 pm at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church with the memorial service following at 3 pm.
