Obituary

Retired Air Force Master Sgt. Charles Warren Greenwell of Fayetteville, born in Brown County, Ill., on July 16, 1919, died Thursday, Nov. 29, 2007. He was a high priest in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for many years. He was an Eagle Scout with 73 years of activity with Boy Scouts of America. He served in the Army Air Corps for four years and the Air Force for 20 years. He sold life insurance for several years after which he came to North Carolina to work with civil service at Fort Bragg for eight years. He was a deputy sheriff in Cumberland County for six years and a ranger for Girl Scouts of America for 15 years in Richmond and Cumberland counties. He also retired from the Civil Air Patrol with 12 years of service and from the Coast Guard Auxilary with 15 years of service. He was patriarch of the Greenwell Family Organization, with a worldwide membership since 1977. He spent many, many hours corresponding with members of the family organization. He was a knight in the Order of St. John Hospitals of Jerusalem. Funeral services will be held Monday, Dec. 3, 2007, at 1 p.m. at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 3200 Scotty Hill Road. Burial with full military honors will follow at T.J. Hall Family Cemetery in Autryville. He was preceded in death by his sister, Lois E. Hazlehurst, on Jan. 12, and a stepdaughter, Amanda Honeycutt. He is survived by his wife, Esther; a son, Arnold Greenwell of Hurdle Mills; a daughter, Charlotte Miller and her husband, Dr. Mark D. Miller, of Hopkinsville, Ky.; five grandchildren, Leila Miller, Jennifer Johnson and Anna, Ty and Ryan Miller; four stepchildren, Valerie Fann, Julia McPhail, Charylene Honeycutt, and Tifton Faircloth; and six stepgrandchildren, Brian Honeycutt, John IV, Joshua, Jacob and Janna Sims, and Jessica Fann. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home.
