FAYETTEVILLE - Charles Allen Smith, 82, of Fayetteville, died Saturday, June 19, 2010, at his residence, surrounded by his wife, daughter and grandson.
He was an Army veteran of World War II. Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. today, Tuesday, June 22, 2010, in Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home chapel in Fayetteville, with the Rev. Floyd Benfield officiating. The burial will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 23, 2010, in Lafayette Memorial Park, with military honors.
Mr. Smith was the comptroller for Coble Dairy by vocation. He retired in 1989 after 33 years of service. By avocation, Mr. Smith was a physicist. He eagerly educated family and friends about matters in quantum physics, and enjoyed introducing young children to the basics of physics. His scientific understandings led him to a great awe of the universe and a deep faith in God. He often commented that any thinking person should conclude there is a God after examining the wonders of our natural world.
Mr. Smith was a private and introverted man who savored time alone to contemplate the workings of the cosmos and his relationship with God. He enjoyed numerous activities of solitude, including bird watching, growing unusual plants and flowers, listening to classical music, and reading voraciously.
Mr. Smith enjoyed fish fries with family and close friends. He spent many weekends frying fish and drinking scuppernong wine on his deck with his brother. He relished eating simply prepared foods and was especially fond of homemade desserts.
Mr. Smith's life enriched the lives of many others. His passing leaves a profound void but the wisdom and faith he inspired will sustain his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce Britt Smith of the home; daughter, Laura Nell Smith of Fayetteville; grandson, Jason Smith Allen of Fayetteville; sister, Janice McDaniel and her husband, Dr. Jack McDaniel, of Fayetteville; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends following the service this evening at the funeral home.
