FAYETTEVILLE - Retired Air Force Col. Charles Brantley West of Fayetteville passed away Saturday, Jan. 21, 2012. He was born and raised in Sampson County. He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Katie Godwin West. Charles is survived by his six children and their spouses, Diane Young and her husband, Dale, Dr. Charles B. West and his wife, Laurie, Amy O'Donoghue and her husband, Bill, Steve West and his wife, Kathy, Catherine West and her husband, Peter Gleissner, and Debra Rhodes and her husband, Rob; and 15 grandchildren. Charles was a graduate of then-East Carolina College and received a master's degree from Auburn University. He had a distinguished career in the Air Force spanning 30 years. He was active in the Corvair Society of America, the Order of Daedalians, and as a volunteer for the Retiree Affairs Office on Pope Air Force Base. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 tonight, Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2012, at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home. The funeral will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 26, 2012, in St. Patrick Catholic Church. Burial with military honors will follow in Lafayette Memorial Park on Ramsey Street. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting contributions be made to the Order of Daedalions Scholarship Fund, Harley H. Pope Flight, 6833 Towbridge Road, Fayetteville, NC 28306, or to St. Patrick Catholic Church.
