Obituary

MSG Charles Henry Wrenn, US Army Retired, 84, died Sunday, December 31, 2006, at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. Charles Henry Wrenn was born July 27, 1922 to Lloyd Whitson Wrenn and Edith Smith Wrenn in Salisbury. He received his education at Boyden High School in Salisbury and received a bachelor's degree in English at Catawba College in Salisbury. He was in the Army prior to going to college and was called back after graduation due to the Korean War. Charles met his wife, Helen, at Catawba College and they were married on Aug. 2, 1953, in the First Baptist Church in Mocksville. They spent a year in Monterey, CA, where he studied Mandarin Chinese at the Language School. He then went to Korea for 18 months and upon his return was stationed on Fort Bragg for the remainder of his 22 years in the military, with the exception of a tour in Vietnam. After retirement, he started teaching at the Army Education Center on Fort Bragg, Southwood College in Salemburg, and then with the Cumberland County schools. Continuing his education, he received a master's degree and an Education Specialist degree at East Carolina University in educational administration and was a principal with the Cumberland County School System until retirement. He was a member of Creasy Proctor Masonic Lodge and the Cumberland County Shrine Club. As a volunteer, he gave 20 years to the City Rescue Mission as assistant director. He especially enjoyed traveling, reading and trivia. He was a faithful member of First Baptist Church, Fayetteville, where he was active on various committees, a choir member, and a longtime member of the Men's Bible Class. A funeral service will be held at 2 pm Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2007, in First Baptist Church with the Rev. A. Edward Beddingfield officiating. Entombment will follow at LaFayette Memorial Park. Charles is survived by his wife, Helen; a daughter, Cindy Wrenn of Fayetteville; a sister, Gypsie Kepley of North Myrtle Beach, SC; and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 pm Tuesday evening, Jan. 2, 2007, at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 201 Anderson St., Fayetteville, NC 28301.
