Christopher Massengill
Overfelt
May 1, 1955 – August 17, 2017
Christopher Massengill Overfelt, 62, of Laurinburg, died Thursday, Aug. 17, 2017 at Duke University Heart Center.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 22 at Antioch United Methodist Church, the Rev. Walter Gaskins officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service in the church fellowship hall.
Chris is survived by his wife of 34 years, Patricia; his mother, Hilda Massengill Overfelt; daughters Abbigail and Michelle; son Michael; grandchildren Dylan, Kyle, Aeowynne, Kyea and Zoey; brothers Michael and Todd; a sister, Jackie; and many nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Truman.
Mr. O, Daddy, Dad and Papa will be greatly missed by his family. He was a loving husband and enthusiastic father who delighted in his family and all their joys, however small. A quiet observer, Dad liked helping others take notice of life's beautiful little details.
Chris's meticulous nature made him an excellent carpenter and, later, a successful commercial and industrial superintendent. He was a proud employee of Evans General Contractors. His 40-year career took him from building homes from the ground up to overseeing the construction of multi-million dollar manufacturing facilities across the country. Meanwhile, he and Patricia carved a beautiful homestead out of a 10-acre forest in Parkton; and later bought their castle in Laurinburg, where they had planned to enjoy retirement.
Chris was at home outside. He enjoyed camping, fishing, target shooting, swimming, working alongside his wife and children, and lying in the hammock after a job well done. His happy place was in the pool, surrounded by his family; or on the back of a motorcycle, cruising the Blue Ridge Parkway.
He will be remembered for his ability to fix anything, from homes to cars to skinned knees; his readiness to help at a moment's notice, either by doing or teaching; the intense pride he felt for himself, his family and his work; and a surprisingly silly sense of humor that brought joy to everyday moments. His death leaves a void that will never be filled, but our lives are more full having known him.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Chris may be made to the American Heart Association, via heart.org.
