Obituary

Mr. Daniel Frederick Owen, 84, of Fayetteville, passed away Monday, January 15, 2007, at the NC State Veterans Nursing Home. He was a lifetime resident of Fayetteville and son of the late Percy and Elizabeth Owen, also of Fayetteville. During World War II Mr. Owen served in the Army as a radio communications specialist. Following the war years he opened Owen's Radio Service on Hay Street. In the 1950's, he provided training in electronics for high school students in his shop and in the classroom at Fayetteville High School. He held a ham radio operator license and trained technicians under NC state apprenticeship and Army \\"Project Transition\\". Mr. Owen was also an instructor at Fayetteville Technical Community College. From 1956 to 1975 he owned and operated Owen's TV Sales and Service. Mr. Owen founded the radion station WIDU and remained active with the station for over 15 years. He was a past member of the Fayetteville Exchange Club, involved with the Urban Ministries, and teaching adult reading. As an active member of Haymount United Methodist Church, he served on the board of Trustees. Mr. Owen is survived by his wife of 60 years, Elizabeth Campbell Owen of the home; his children, Daniel F. Owen Jr., of Fayetteville, Vickie Butler and her husband, Ben, of Myrtle Beach, and mary Fowler and her husband, John, of Pinehurst; his grandchildren, Ryan and Thomas Butler and Lindsay Fowler; a sister, Lucille Cole and her husband, Herman of Charlotte; and a brother, John Clarence Owen and his wife, Ruth, of Fayetteville. Funeral services will be held at 3 pm Sunday, Jan. 21, 2007, at Haymount United Methodist Church with Dr. Brian Gentle officiating. Burial will be held in LaFayette Memorial Park. A visitation will be held Sunday, prior to the service from 1 to 2:30 pm at Jernigan Warren Funeral Home. The family requests memorials be made to Haymount United Methodist Church, 1700 Fort Bragg Road, Fayetteville NC 28303.
