Obituary

Darrell C. Cook, 88, of Fayetteville, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 6, 2007. He was born to George C. Cook and Lura Pyles Cook on Feb. 20, 1919, in West Virginia and was a resident of Fayetteville for 54 years. Mr. Cook was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in the South Pacific during World War II. He was preceded in death by his wife of 39 years, Janie Hollingsworth Cook; and his brother, Harold Cook of West Virginia. He leaves to cherish his memory his sons, Dennis D. Cook and wife Frances of Yorktown, Va., and Ronald G. Cook and wife Debra of Raleigh; four grandchildren, Jennifer K. Cook of Yorktown, James D. Cook of Williamsburg, Va., and Christopher B. Cook and Carson E. Cook, both of Raleigh; his sister, Rosalie Pell of Morgantown, W.Va.; and his longtime companion and dear friend, Mayme Mayes of Fayetteville and her family. The family wishes to thank the staffs of Village Green Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Highsmith-Rainey Hospice and Palliative Care Unit and Cape Fear Valley Medical Center for their care and kindness to Darrell during his illness. The family especially thanks Linda Baldwin of Fayetteville, who tirelessly and lovingly cared for him during his illness. Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2007, at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home in Fayetteville, followed by the funeral service at 2 p.m. in the Jernigan-Warren chapel conducted by Kenny Hollingsworth. Burial will be at Lafayette Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that expressions of sympathy be made to Disabled American Veterans at DAV Memorial Program, P.O. Box 14301, Cincinnati, OH 45250-0301; or Wounded Warrior Project, National Processing Center, P.O. Box 758516, Topeka, KS 66675-8516.
