Colonel David Ellis Cardin passed away August 6, 2017. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dr. Bettie Jo Smith Cardin. He is survived by his daughter, Becca Shannon Cardin, and her son, Noah Thomas Cardin; his son William Summerhill Cardin, his wife, Dr. Dana Cardin, and their children, Henry Summerhill Cardin and Eleanor Catherine Cardin, as well as dear family friend William Rhoades and his husband, Craig McNamara.
David attended veterinary school at Auburn University, where he met Bettie Jo. After graduation he joined the U. S. Air Force. David was the only medical officer to serve two terms in Vietnam; after the war he attended Missouri State University where he received his master's degree in Public Health. He served his country for over 20 years, retiring as a full Colonel in 1990, at which time he and Bettie Jo opened their own veterinary practice, Ellis Memorial Animal Hospital.
David will be remembered for his brilliant mind, quick wit, and kind heart. He will be buried in Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors.
