Obituary

FAYETTEVILLE - David Perry \\"D.P.\\" Russ Jr., 92, died Saturday, Aug. 21, 2010, in Lower Cape Hospice Care Center in Wilmington. He was born Feb. 20, 1918, in Bladen County. His family moved to Fayetteville when he was 2. He remained in Fayetteville until 2009, when he moved to Wilmington to be closer to family members. He was educated in the city schools of Fayetteville. Upon high school graduation, he attended UNC Chapel Hill and earned a bachelor of science degree in commerce in 1938 and a law degree in 1940. Russ practiced law until 1942, when he was inducted into the Army. He was assigned to the Military Intelligence section as a special agent for the Counterintelligence Corps. He served in this capacity until the end of the war. He served in the reserves until he was honorably discharged with the rank of captain. While he was in the military, he was married to Helen Barnard of Augusta, Ga. This marriage lasted until her death Nov. 21, 2008, a period of almost 65 years. After his military service, Russ returned to Fayetteville and was associated with the law firm of Oates, Quillin and MacRae. He continued to practice with the same firm until his retirement in 1998. By this time, the firm had evolved to Russ, Worth, Cheatwood and Hancox. Russ stayed closely affiliated with the local and State Bar associations. He served as president of the Cumberland County Bar in 1958 and served two terms on the board of governors of the State Bar Association. He served as vice president in 1981. A true labor of love was his affiliation with the University of North Carolina. He was elected in 1967 to an 8-year term on the board of trustees of the university by the N.C. General Assembly. He later served on the board of visitors at UNC Chapel Hill for 11 years and was elected as a director of the General Alumni Association. He endowed a scholarship for the Educational Foundation and was a member of the Rams Club from 1946 until his death. Russ was active in civic affairs: he joined the Jaycees shortly after retiring from military service and later served as president. He joined the Rotary in 1951 and served as president in 1967. He later helped establish the West Fayetteville club and was a Paul Harris Fellow. Russ was a longtime member of First Baptist Church in Fayetteville, where he taught several youth classes and served on the board of deacons until he became a lifetime deacon. He served on the board of trustees for 40 years. He served as chairman of the trustees for many years and served one term as church moderator. He received many honors and awards during his lifetime, but he truly found great pleasure in service to others. He is survived by two sons, David P. Russ III (Linda) of Wilmington and Dr. Donald B. Russ (Martha) of Morganton; four grandchildren, David Scott Russ (Meghan), Michael Perry Russ, Erik McMurray Russ and Emily Rebecca Russ; and two great-grandchildren, Jackson and Campbell. In lieu of flowers, it is requested that contributions be made to First Baptist Church, UNC Chapel Hill, Campbell University or Methodist University. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2010, at First Baptist Church, 201 Anderson St., with the Rev. A. Edward Beddingfield Jr. and Dr. Michael Cogdill officiating. Burial will follow in Cross Creek Cemetery in Fayetteville. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Memorial Lounge at the church. Services entrusted to Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home of Fayetteville.
