David Vernon McMillan, Sr.
Fayetteville - David Vernon McMillan Sr. of Fayetteville, died Tuesday, June 15, 2014 as a result of injuries from a car accident on Fort Bragg.
He was retired as a Colonel in the NC National Guard with 36 years of service and also retired from Sears, Roebuck & Co. as a Dept. manager after 35 years. He was a devoted and founding member of Peace Presbyterian Church. He served as a deacon, Elder Emeritus, and nominated for the "Outstanding Senior Adult Award" for his many volunteer services.
He taught Sunday school for all ages, conducted "Wee Worship" for the pre-school children in the pastor's absence and led the Highland House Nursing Home Ministry for over 40 years. He volunteered at the Salvation Army, Save the Babies House of Refuge and Second Harvest Food Bank. He was an active participant in the NC senior games and earned numerous metals in various sports. He loved fishing, traveling, and supporting his UNC Tarheels in any sport.
The family will receive friends on Friday, July 18, 2014 from 6pm to 8pm at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home. The funeral will be held on Saturday, July 19, 2014 at 2:30pm in Peace Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow in Lafayette Memorial Park on Ramsey Street.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Donnie McMillan, his son David McMillan Jr. and Paula of Fayetteville, daughter Donna M. Weaver, her husband Arthur, and grandson Andrew Weaver of Oviedo, FL plus numerous family members who lovingly claimed him as their "Uncle David." God needed another angel but the legacy of his love and devotion to his family and community will be missed by countless people.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Peace Presbyterian Church 3203 Ramsey Street Fayetteville, NC 28301.
