Retired US Army Chief Warrant Officer 4 David Lee Savage, 77, of Fayetteville, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 4, 2014 at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. He was born June 26, 1936 in Holden, West Virginia to the late Hubert Glenn and Mary DePietro Savage.
Left to cherish his memories are his wife of 51 years, Shirley Savage; sons Michael and Jeffrey Savage of Fayetteville, Greg Savage of Vevay, Indiana and daughter Monnie Shoemaker of Tampa, Florida. He is also survived by two brothers, William Savage and wife Annette of Brown Deer, Wisconsin; Glenn Savage and wife Carol of Westerville, Ohio; daughter-in-law, Paula Savage of Fayetteville; and grandchildren: Samuel, Sarah, Chris, Staci, Heather, Travis, Michael and five great-grandchildren.
He worked in the West Virginia coal mines as a young man, enlisted in the Marine Corps at age 16 where he served bravely in the Korean War. In 1958 was appointed a Warrant Officer in the Army and served during Vietnam War as commander in the 234th Signal Company. He retired at Fort Bragg, NC in 1984 after 32 years of active federal service as a Chief Warrant Officer 4. During his illustrious and decorated military career he was awarded the Legion of Merit Medal, the Bronze Star Medal with 3 OLC, the Air Medal, and the Army Commendation Medal with Valor, along with many others. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Campbell University, was a dedicated member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, a lifetime member of the Southern Athletic Officials Association, a dedicated sports official for all sports and an avid golfer.
Services will be held on Tuesday, February 11, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at Jernigan-Warren Chapel with Haywood Smith, officiating. Burial will follow at Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery in Spring Lake with full military honors. The family will receive friends at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home on Monday, February 10, 2014 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.
