Obituary

David Wayne Smith, 65, of Fayetteville, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 17, 2026, at his residence, surrounded by his loving family.

David was born on December 13, 1960, in Kansas City, Missouri, to Joel K. Smith and Vivian Rodgers Smith.

David retired after 32 years of dedicated service with Goodyear Tire Co. Following his retirement, he became affectionately known as “the Pool Man,” installing above-ground pools, building decks, and taking on various small construction projects. A true jack-of-all-trades, David could do just about anything he set his mind to.

He had a special interest in helicopters, enjoying researching them, watching them fly and often joking that one day he would buy one of his own. David was quick-witted and had a wonderful sense of humor that brought laughter to those around him. He had a deep love for dogs and was an active member of Praise Fellowship Church. He was also known by many for his beloved role as Santa Claus, bringing joy and smiles to countless children and families.

Above all, David was big-hearted and generous. He had a way of being “anything to everybody,” always willing to lend a helping hand, share a laugh, or simply be there for someone in need. He will be remembered as a loving husband, son, dad, brother, Papa, and friend.

David was preceded in death by his mother, Vivian Rodgers Smith; his brother, Dennis Smith; and his sister, Tammy Gunn.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife of 45 years, Becky “Babydoll” Lucas Smith; daughters, Ashley Szoka and husband Hunter, and Audrey Smith McBride; his father, Joel Smith; brother, Robert Smith; and grandchildren, Kendall Smith, Hannah McBride, Joshua McBride, Elijah McBride, Judah McBride, and Willow Szoka.

The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m. on Friday, August 21, 2026, at Praise Fellowship Church. A funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m. A private family burial will be held at Old Bluff Cemetery.

David’s laughter, kindness, humor, and generous spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. Though he is deeply missed, his family finds comfort in the many memories and the love he leaves behind.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home, 545 Ramsey St., Fayetteville, N.C. 28301.
