Obituary

FAYETTEVILLE - Dohn B. Broadwell Sr. died Wednesday at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. He was 85.

Mr. Broadwell was a land developer and builder in Cumberland County for more than 60 years. He and his late brother, Waverly, began building houses during the postwar boom of the 1950s in neighborhoods such as Cottonade.

After the brothers separated their construction business in the 1970s, Dohn formed Broadwell Land Co. The company went on to develop Fayetteville neighborhoods including Summertime, Kingsford, Buckhead and Greystone.

Mr. Broadwell was known for his love for the outdoors. He was an avid bird hunter and supporter of Ducks Unlimited. Over the last 25 years, he worked to develop wildlife habitat and restore longleaf pine forests on his land near White Oak in Bladen County. In 1999, he was named the state's Conservationist of the Year for his work to preserve a wildlife corridor on hundreds of acres of land he bought near Suggs Mill Pond. He received a number of civic awards for his efforts to promote local economic development. He served on several boards, including the vestry at St. John's Episcopal Church, Methodist College trustees and the North Carolina chapter of The Nature Conservancy.

He was a skilled carpenter. He enjoyed working the land, plowing and mowing and planting trees (from longleaf pines to his beloved Atlantic white cedar). He volunteered many hours, along with friends, to restore the bobwhite quail population at Fort Bragg. Mr. Broadwell grew up in Woodbine, Ga., and St. Pauls, N.C., where his father owned a hardware store and building supply business.

He graduated from the University of North Carolina.

He was predeceased by his wife, Charlotte Lilly Broadwell.

His survivors include his three sons, Dohn Broadwell Jr. and wife Sherri of Eastover, Charles Broadwell of Fayetteville and Richard Broadwell of Bakersville; and two grandchildren, Dillon and Charlotte.

Mr. Broadwell remained active in business and forestry up until two years ago when his health declined.

The family appreciates the outstanding care provided by his doctors, nurses and others, including caregivers Veronica, Ida, Crystal, Tony, Theresa, Linda and Darlene. A memorial service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church. The family will receive friends afterward at the Kyle House next to the church on Green Street.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Cumberland Community Foundation, NC Chapter of The Nature Conservancy or Ducks Unlimited.
