Obituary

Donald Hugh (Don) Orr was born December 30, 1930, in Kingfisher, Oklahoma, the second son of Hugh and Lois Dunlap Orr. He was reunited with his wife Polly, son Jeff, and many other relatives and friends in heaven on September 20, 2023.

Don married the love of his life, Polly, on August 3, 1952, and soon moved to Fayetteville, NC to fulfill his obligation to the US Army at Fort Bragg. Don and Polly found an unexpected home base here and decided to establish this as the place where they would serve the Lord and raise their family. They were respected educators in the Fort Bragg Dependents Schools and Fayetteville City/Cumberland County school systems. Don was a teacher, administrator, and Benefits Coordinator, and in those roles he helped many students, families, and teachers. He earned degrees at Central State University in Edmond, Oklahoma and later at East Carolina University.

Don and Polly found a church home at Snyder Memorial Baptist Church soon after moving to Fayetteville, and both of them served in many ways there for the rest of their lives. They loved the church, and through the years they ministered to countless people of all ages there, showing by their example how to live lives that honored the Lord and each other. Some of the roles Don assumed at Snyder included deacon, Moderator, Sunday School teacher, committee member, and softball player and coach. Don was a perfect example of a "people person." He loved getting to know people and their stories and learning ways that he could help them. Because he genuinely cared about people, he was an outstanding leader in each of the roles he served in. People trusted him and respected his counsel.

Don was an avid sports fan all his life. His favorite teams included the Oklahoma Sooners, Atlanta Braves, Duke Blue Devils, and North Carolina Tar Heels. (Yes, you read that correctly. He truly did like both of those last two teams.) Some of his favorite times were excursions to the ACC Tournament with friends and family. For several years he and Polly attended the tournament together, and they had quite a collection of stories to share about some of the experiences there. He also enjoyed several trips with friends to see the Braves play. A particularly admirable thing about him is that he was always a good sport, win or lose, a trait that unfortunately was not passed down to his sports-loving children or grandchildren. Don's greatest joy in life was spending time with family and friends. Nothing made him happier than having them around. He loved family holidays, vacations, trips, and just sharing a meal. He was an involved father, granddad and great grandad as well. He taught his great grandchildren to make pancakes, proudly beaming as they took over the entire process as they got older. He attended many sports, school, and church activities that involved his loved ones, and he was the greatest supporter and encourager we could ask for.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, his wife Polly, and son Jeff. He is survived by his daughters Beth Dees (former husband Brent) and Lisa Orr; his grandchildren Matt Dees (Becky) of Durham, Robert Dees (Crystal) of Missoula, Montana, and Sarah Dees Mou (Mike) of Bethesda, Maryland; great grandchildren, Aidan and Caroline Dees, Mitchell Mou, and Charlie Dees, arriving in December; brother-in-law Earl Bengs; sister-in-law Marlene Tompkins; several loving nieces and nephews; and a multitude of friends.

Our family is grateful for the care that Dad received at The Addison of Fayetteville and by the staff of Bayada Hospice as well as the cards, visits, and prayers of friends through the last several months. We are proud of the legacy he's left here, and we know that he was welcomed into heaven with the words, "Well done, good and faithful servant."
