Obituary

Donald R. Poston, 68, of Hope Mills, died Monday, Sept. 19, 2011, at N.C. Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill following a courageous year-long battle with leukemia. He was born December 6, 1942 in Fayetteville. Son of the late Docia Koonce Maddox and Howard E. Maddox, he was a proud graduate of Massey Hill High School, Class of 1961. To his classmates, he was Donnie, a terrific athlete and a real character. Like so many others from the Hill, his first job was at the Lakedale Plant just down the street from where he grew up on Quality Road. He spent most of his career in the car sales business here in Fayetteville, working for many years at Stewart Oldsmobile-Nissan and Lafayette Ford. After retiring, he worked part-time for Cumberland County Schools, both as a bus driver and as a cafeteria monitor where he was known by all the kids he loved so much as Mr. Don. Most recently he had been working as a courtesy driver back at Lafayette Ford. He was a member of Hope Mills United Methodist Church. Don is survived by his devoted wife of 48 years, Carolyn Davis Poston, his daughter and her husband, Fairlyn and Woody Barrosse of Fayetteville; his son and his wife, Keith and Vanessa Poston of Raleigh; five grandchildren, Amy Sansom Huckabee (and husband Victor), Nashville, TN, Brittany Barrosse, Greensboro, NC, Bryan Sansom and Abigail Barrosse, both of Fayetteville, NC, and Cecilia Poston, Raleigh, NC. He is also survived by his brother and best friend, Jerry Poston and his wife Becky of Fayetteville and his dear sister-in-law Belinda Davis of Hope Mills. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. Don was a friend to so many and was always there when anyone needed a hand. He loved fishing, yard sales, Y&R and NASCAR, but he loved grilling out for his family and friends most of all. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, Sept. 23 at Hope Mills United Methodist Church, 4955 Legion Road. The Rev. Dr. Dennis Sheppard will officiate. Burial will be at Lafayette Memorial Park on Ramsey Street. Relatives and friends are welcome at the Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home, 545 Ramsey St. on Thursday, Sept. 22 from 7 - 9 p.m. The family asks that contributions be made in Don Poston
