Southern Pines- Retired Navy Cmdr. Douglas Irwin Smiley, 88, died Friday, Jan. 5, 2007, in FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst. A mass of Christian Burial will be said at 11 am Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2007, in St. Patrick Catholic Church in Fayetteville. Burial will be at 9 am Thursday, Feb. 1, 2007, in Arlington National Cemetery, in Arlington, VA. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 pm Monday, Jan. 8, 2007,at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home in Fayetteville. Douglas, a World War II veteran, retired after 30 years of service in communication electronics. He had received the Legion of Merit and Joint Service Commendation medals, among other Navy honors. He is survived by Mary, his wife of 62 years; sons, the Rev. Douglas J. Smiley, Robert J. Smiley and Charles C. Smiley; and daughters, Mary L. Bianchetti and Anne M. Smiley. Douglas is also survived by seven grandsons; and two great-grandsons. We thank you for a lifetime of strength, loyalty, duty and love. We thank you for your support and friendship.
