Obituary

Edgar C. Garber, age 94, died peacefully on January 1, 2014, at Carolina Inn. He was born in New Castle, Pennsylvania, the son of the late Edgar Clyde and Martha Hyde Garber, and spent much of his childhood in Richmond, Virginia. His parents spent their later years in Greensboro, North Carolina. Also preceding Ed in death was his son, Lee Carner Garber, a grandson, Edgar C. "Cy" Garber, IV, and sisters, Sara Garber Bright and Jean Garber Hinson. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Pat, a daughter, Amy Hyde Garber Byrd, a son, E.C. "Ned" Garber, III, three grandchildren-Ross and Anna Byrd, and Molly Garber, two daughters-in-law-Sharon and Caroline Garber, and numerous nieces and nephews. Ed moved to Fayetteville in 1950 and set up his medical practice that would continue for 38 years. He graduated from the University of Richmond in 1941 and the Medical College of Virginia in 1944. He served as Captain in the US Army for two years before coming to Fayetteville, and he enjoyed a successful medical career in OB/GYN with CT Daniel, Bob Morrison, and Steve Gooding. After delivering an estimated 10,000 babies, he retired from obstetrics in 1974 and gynecology in 1988, after a long and distinguished career. Ed spent his life serving his beloved institutions. He excelled as a student at the University of Richmond where he served as President of the Student Government Association. He continued to serve on staff at Pittman, Highsmith, and Cape Fear Valley Hospitals. His credentials were numerous and included the following: Certification by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, a Fellows in the American College of Surgeons and the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecologists, Chief of Staff and Chair of the Credentials and Surgical Committees at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, President of the Cumberland County Medical Society, and memberships in the South Atlantic Association of Ob-Gyn, Southeastern Ob-Gyn Society, assistant clinical professor of Ob/Gyn at Duke University, and Chairman of the Fayetteville Board of Duke Ob/Gyn. In the 1950's, Dr. Garber was well-published in numerous medical journals. He also performed the first surgical and laparoscopic procedures at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. As a young boy, Ed and his family lived in Dayton, Ohio, where his love of and fascination with airplanes were born. During his professional career and retirement, he successfully restored and flew 11 antique airplanes which captured his boyhood imagination like no other. His basement became his hangar until time to assemble the wings. He spent countless hours flying at Grannis field, the "I-95" grass strip in Robeson County, and a private strip in Hoke County. Annual pilgrimages were made to several fly-ins at Lakeland, Fla., Oshkosh, Wis., and Blakesburg, Iowa where he was a lifetime member of the Antique Airplane Association. Ed was a legend and well respected among his airplane buddies. Several of his restored airplanes hang in museums today. When he wasn't flying, enjoyed playing golf as a member of the Cape Fear Seniors. The Garbers joined Snyder Memorial Baptist Church in 1951, where Ed served as deacon. In 1968, he and his wife travelled to Nigeria to serve as medical missionaries for 6 weeks. They were the first members of Snyder to serve as volunteer missionaries. He was a member of the Cogswell Sunday School class. A memorial service celebrating Ed's life will be held at Snyder Memorial Baptist Church on Monday, January 6, 2014 at 11:30 am. The family will receive guests an hour prior to the service in the church's gathering hall. At his request, Ed will be laid to rest in the family section of Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, Virginia, at a later date. The family would like to express our sincere appreciation and gratitude to the staff and caregivers of Carolina Inn, Home Instead, Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, 3HC Hospice, and Jim Heine, for their care.
