Obituary

Graveside services for Mrs. Edith Bruce, 102, who died Wednesday, January 28, 2009, at the Mann House in Sandy Springs, Ga. will be held Monday, February 2, 2009, at 3 o'clock p.m. in LaFayette Memorial Park with Dr. Ewart \\"Doc\\" Wyle officiating. Edith was born in Huntington, West Virginia in December 1906, one of eight children of William and Florence Via. She graduated from the Cleveland Clinic for Medical Technology in 1928 and worked in Cleveland for a short time. She returned to Huntington and worked for the C&O Railroad Hospital. She married Denver Bryant who was a police officer in Huntington. He died of appendicitis in 1941. In 1943, she married Calvin Bruce in Huntington and they became members of the Johnson Memorial Methodist Church. They and their two children moved to Fayetteville, NC in 1951 and transferred their church membership to Highland Presbyterian Church. She retired from the Veterans Administration Hospital in Fayetteville in 1980. Upon the death of her husband Calvin in 1987, she relocated to Cooper Hall, a Retirement/Assisted Living Home, in Mt. Pleasant, SC. She transferred her church membership to Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church where she is still an inactive member. In 2003, with the help of her son and daughter, she moved to the Mann House, a private nursing home in Atlanta, Ga. Surviving are her daughter, Barbara Bruce of Atlanta, Georgia; her son, Michael Bruce of Greensboro, NC / Naples, FL; two grandchildren, Lindsay and Jeff Bruce; a brother, James Via of Clearwater, FL, and 24 nieces and nephews and their children.
