FAYETTEVILLE - Eugene A. "Gene" Joyce, 75, of Fayetteville, passed away Monday, Dec. 12, 2011, at his home.
Born in Ellerbe in 1936 to the late Arthur Joyce and Savannah Campbell as the youngest of 12 children, he spent a majority of his childhood in Randolph County. He was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War and during his assignments, stood security detail for such celebrities as Bob Hope during his USO tours.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, James Joyce and Elmer Joyce; sisters, Lucile Adycock, Lillie Scarborough, Betty Sue Overman, Margie Byrd, Ruth Lovin and Nellie Sanderson.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Betty Overman Joyce of the home; sons, Allen Joyce and wife Patricia, Todd Joyce and wife Megan; grandchildren, Jeffrey, Jennifer and Jordyn; and his great-granddaughter, Haylee. He is also survived by sisters, Dorothy "Bill" Williams of Fayetteville, Mary Rummage of Lexington and Edith Watson of Franklinville.
A memorial service is planned for 6 tonight, Thursday, Dec. 15, 2011, at the chapel of Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home in Fayetteville, with the Rev. Dean Kennedy and Clarence Privette officiating. The visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. today, Thursday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Haymount Freewill Baptist Church, 136 Eastwood Ave., Fayetteville, NC 28301.Memorial Service: 6:00pm Thursday December 15, 2011 at Jernigan-Warren Chapel.
