Obituary

Flavia died peacefully in her sleep at home on January 13 with her beloved dog Casey by her side.

She was born June 4, 1936 in Manhasset, NY, the daughter of Herbert and Bertha Seeger. She attended Manhasset High School and later the University of Greensboro in Greensboro, NC, during which time she married and began her life-long passion--being a mother.

She had six wonderful children whom she adored and cared for through life's many challenges, always evolving with the times and circumstances before her. She was blessed with ten beautiful grandchildren and two great grandchildren and was considered "mom" by countless others.

She worked for nearly 30 years for the Cumberland County Public Library and, inspired by her love of books and reading, continued to volunteer there until her death.

Second only to her children, she was an avid dog lover and raised and trained many, many dogs over the years. During her retirement, she and her current therapy dog Casey volunteered at several local nursing homes, schools, libraries, and a Veterans Center, bringing joy and comfort to countless residents, students, and patients. She and Casey were honored with the Therapy Dog Volunteer of the Year Award from the Child Advocacy Center and recognized by Therapy Dog International/America Kennel Club for tireless and selfless service over the years.

Flavia is survived by her six children: Benjamin Garrett Thompson of Charlotte, his wife Lynne and children Rebecca and David; Ashley Ellen Thompson of Fayetteville, her children Caleb and Dustin, his wife April, and their two children Noah and Amelia; Daniel Kent Thompson of Wrightsville Beach, his wife Maria and children Leah and Cyrus; Cyrus Scott Thompson of Washington, DC and his partner Jon Berry; Laura Thompson Ashford of Raleigh, her husband Nick and children Hadley and Clay; and David McKinney Thompson of Wilmington, his wife Tiffany and children Bodey and Adaire.

A memorial service will be held Monday, January 16, 2017 at 4 P.M. at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home. The family will receive friends following the service. An additional memorial service will be held in Wilmington, NC at a later date.
