Obituary

Mrs. Florence Lou Cooper Wellons-Godwin, of Fayetteville, passed away Tuesday, March 13, 2007, in her home. Flo, as she was known to her friends, was born on Feb. 15, 1927, in Falcon to the late Allie Cooper and Bliss Goff Cooper. Mrs. Wellons-Godwin was a member of the Dunn Garden Club, Town & Country Garden Club in Fayetteville, a charter member of Northwood Temple and member of the board of directors for Cape Fear Botanical Gardens. She was a faithful, devoted wife, mother and a woman who loved and cherished her grandchildren. She spent her life making the world a more beautiful place through her garden. She was preceded in death by her first husband, William S. Wellons Sr; a son, David T. Wellons; and her brother, Allie Cooper Jr. She is survived by her husband, Oliver W. Godwin; three sons, William S. Wellons Jr. and wife Colleen and Charles R. Wellons II. and wife Judy, all of Fayetteville, and W. Cooper Wellons of Myrtle Beach; daughter-in-law, Mildred J. Wellons of Myrtle Beach; 14 grandchildren, Kristin C. Wellons, James C. Johnson, Ryan P. Johnson, C. Jason Wellons, Jenna W. Hilton, David T. Wellons Jr., Jonathan W. Wellons, Denise C. Staton, Chad Jerome Carriker, Toni C. Jones, Wesley C. Wellons Jr., Ashlin Robin Wellons, Florence Chandler Wellons and William Hunter Wellons; and 13 great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends Thursday evening, March 15, 2007, from 6 to 9 pm at Northwood Temple. Funeral services will be held Friday, March 16, 2007, at 11 am in Northwood Temple with Drs. John Hedgepeth and Ben Crandall officiating. Entombment will follow at LaFayette Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to Northwood Temple Church-Academy, 4250 Ramsey St., Fayetteville NC 28311 or to the Florence C. Wellons Arbor Fund, c/o Cape Fear Botanical Gardens, 536 N. Eastern Blvd. Fayetteville NC 28301.
