Mr. Deshields worked in the Fort Bragg School System for 33 years and was principal of Bowley, Butner, Murray and Spring Area Schools. He also taught math at the Army Education Center. After retirement, Forrest spent 17 years at Fayetteville Technical Institute (now FTCC) working to make the Continuing Education program one of the best in the state. Mr. Deshields was an avid pilot. He had a Piper Arrow, call sign"99 Tango", that he kept at the Fayetteville airport. He and Dot would fly to St. Louis, San Antonio, and Miami to visit family. He loved to pick his grandchildren up for the weekend from school, carefully calculating how much laundry could be flown home along with his passengers. Mr. Deshields loved sports. He refereed football and basketball for years and was a fixture at Stryker and Ryder golf courses on Fort Bragg. He had a boat and loved to water ski at Lake Waccamaw with his family. He learned to snow ski at age 60. The Deshields were long time members at the Sports Center where, even into his eighties, Forrest would swim laps and "pump iron" several times a week. Mr. Deshields loved to travel and had visited six out of seven continents. He was an animal lover and was never without a dog as his loyal companion. He loved to be entertained. He saw every movie he could and loved going to the theatre. Mr. Deshields was a long time member of Snyder Memorial Baptist Church where he loved his Sunday School Class both for the intellectual stimulation and the opportunity to sport some new threads. Forrest Deshields was a kind and caring man and will be missed by many. His legacy as an educator is known worldwide thanks to his tireless work with the children of our nation
