Obituary

Frank Houston Upchurch died peacefully on Friday, December 28 after a long struggle with cancer. He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, the former Debbie Tyson of Fayetteville; two sons: Donald Upchurch (Maureen) of Cumming, GA and Rock Upchurch (Katherine) of Spring Hill, TN; one daughter: Kelly Upchurch Hurley (Andrew) of Atlanta; four grandchildren Tyson, Bridget, Houston, and Maggie. He is also survived by his sister Gladys Upchurch Julian, (Jimmy), one brother Tommy Upchurch (Adele). For over thirty years, Mr. Upchurch was involved with fundraising and management for many healthcare and educational organizations throughout the southeastern United States. Since 2001, he held the position of President and CEO of Georgia Baptist Health Care Ministry Foundation. Before serving as the President and CEO of Georgia Baptist Health Care Ministry Foundation Mr. Upchurch had previously served as President and CEO of the Georgia Baptist Health Care System. For 13 years, Mr. Upchurch dedicated himself to Campbell University in Buies Creek, NC. Here he rose to the position of Vice President of Institutional Advancement after serving as Alumni Director and Assistant Basketball Coach. While successfully executing the duties of his profession, Mr. Upchurch also served on the Presidential Board of Advisors at Campbell University. He was the medical liaison for the 1996 Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games as well as a member of the Team Selection Committee for the annual NCAA college football Chick-fil-A Bowl. Mr. Upchurch was also active on the Visiting Nurse Hospice Advisory Council, the Shorter College Development Council, the Metro Atlanta YMCA YCEO Committee, and was an honorary member of the 100 Hundred Black Men of Atlanta. Visitation for Mr. Upchurch will be held on December 30 at Jernigan and Warren Funeral Home, 545 Ramsey Street, Fayetteville, from 6 – 8 p.m. Funeral services will be at 11 o'clock a.m. in Snyder Memorial Baptist Church, 701 Westmont Drive, Fayetteville, NC, on Monday, December 31, with the Rev. John Cook officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Frank Upchurch Medical Missions Scholarship Endowment at Campbell University School of Medicine, 450 Lesley Campbell Avenue, Buies Creek, NC 27506. Visitation for Mr. Upchurch will be held on December 30 at Jernigan and Warren Funeral Home, 545 Ramsey Street, Fayetteville, from 6 – 8 p.m. Funeral services will be at 11 am in Snyder Memorial Baptist Church, 701 Westmont Drive, Fayetteville, NC, on Monday, December 31, with the Rev.
