Obituary

FAYETTEVILLE - Mrs. Garnet Opal Dickens Alderman, of Fayetteville, born March 31, 1935, passed away in her sleep on Friday, Dec. 30, 2011. Opal was born in Raleigh County, W.Va., and was the daughter of Millard Dickens and Icie Taylor Dickens. She lived most of her adult life in Fayetteville. Opal was the wife of the late John Harman Alderman, U.S. Army sergeant, and is survived by three living children, John Michael Alderman and wife Gloria of Pittsboro, Patricia Diane Alderman Harrison of Fayetteville, and Millard Dell Alderman and wife Toni of Fayetteville. Also surviving are six grandchildren, John Eric Alderman and wife Jenny, Joseph Douglas Alderman and wife Cheryl, Elizabeth Anne Alderman, Paul Harmon Alderman, Alina Alderman, and Rebecca Harrison Grant and husband Jeffrey; and a great-grandchild, Harrison Michael Grant. Opal is also survived by two brothers, Paul and Dale Dickens; and a sister, Jewel Phipps. Opal was a deeply religious, quiet, loving Christian caregiver. Throughout most of her adult life, she provided intensive care for her husband, daughter, mother, father-in-law and various friends. In addition to caring for others, she had a great love for the wild creatures around her home. This appreciation of nature was passed along to her children and grandchildren, thus enriching their lives. A graveside service will be held at 5 p.m. today, Saturday Dec. 31, 2011, in Lafayette Memorial Park, with the Rev. Archie Barringer officiating. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the National MS Society, P.O. Box 4527 , New York, NY 10163 (phone 800-344-4867).
