DUNN - Retired U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Gene Elfmon Edwards Sr., 70, of Dunn, died Thursday, Feb. 26, 2009, in E. Carlton Powell Hospice Center in Lillington.
Mr. Edwards retired from the Air Force as a master sergeant after 23 years. He was a Vietnam War veteran. He was preceded in death by his brother, Columbus Richard Edwards.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 3, 2009, in Liberty Baptist Church in Spring Lake, with the Rev. David Mickelson and the Rev. Andrew Taylor officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery in Spring Lake.
The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. at Liberty Baptist Church.
Mr. Edwards is survived by his wife, Dorothy Hare Edwards of the home; son, Gene Edwards Jr. of Lancaster, Calif.; two daughters, Cynthia Fay Edwards Browning and her husband, U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Henry Archie Browning, of Harnett County, and Teresa Lynn Edwards of Dunn; three grandchildren, Virginia Lynn Browning, Tyler Edwards and Sean Michael Browning; a sister, Mary Lee Edwards Hall and her husband, Ivy, of Roseboro; and three brothers, Hampton "Buddy" Edwards Jr. of Burlington, Floyd Ronnie Edwards Sr. and his wife, Mary, of Stedman, and Garland Anthony Edwards of Fayetteville.
Memorials may be made to the Gene E. Edwards Sr. Memorial Fund.
