HOPE MILLS - Mrs. Genevieve Maureen Cavanaugh Newbold, 75, of Hope Mills, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on Wednesday, May 4, 2011, in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. Maureen was born Oct. 1, 1935, in Pittsburgh, Pa. She was the daughter of the late Francis Patrick Cavanaugh and the late Dorothy Anne Gildernew. She graduated from St. Luke's Catholic High School in 1953, and performed undergraduate studies at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. Maureen had a genuine love for children and spent most of her adult life working as a teacher's assistant, library assistant and substitute teacher with Cumberland County schools. She worked as recently as three weeks ago and considered the staff of Gray's Creek Elementary School and Alderman Road Elementary School part of her family, too. Maureen spent countless hours working on special projects such as scrapbooks for elementary school children to remember the years. She touched the lives of hundreds of children, their parents and teachers. She was an avid reader and loved to make wreaths and other crafts and paint them. Maureen is survived by her husband, John Edward Newbold of Hope Mills; sons, John (Susan), Gary (Heather), David (Allyson), Scott (Pam), and Randy (Sherrie) Newbold; daughter, Pattie (Fran) Landy; sister, Patricia L. Morelli of Pittsburgh; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Oh, how she loved her grandchildren! The family will receive relatives and friends from 1 to 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 15, 2011, at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home on Ramsey Street in Fayetteville. A memorial service to celebrate her life will follow at 2 p.m. at the funeral home chapel with Mr. Tommy Underwood, pastor of Tabernacle Baptist Church of Raeford, officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society ; or the charity of the donor's choice.
