FAYETTEVILLE - Retired Master Sgt. George Fredrick Dew Jr., 86, of Fayetteville, passed away Thursday, June 14, 2012, in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.
George was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Margaret Singletary Dew, and his son, William F. Dew.
George is survived by his daughter, Marsha Lynne Dew Baumgart and her husband, Keith Edward Baumgart, of Fayetteville; and a brother, William Edward Dew of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Master Sgt.
Dew had a long military career beginning by serving in the Navy during World War II in both the Pacific and Atlantic theaters. He joined the National Guard and spent time in Korea and then joined the regular Army and became a Special Forces soldier. He served in Vietnam but mostly in the Panama Canal Zone. Master Sgt. Dew's last assignment was overseeing the move of the Special Forces Museum from its old location to its present-day location. He retired in 1980.
Private citizen George Dew then bought a Peterbilt truck with a sleeper and became a long haul trucker. He and Mrs. Dew would travel together at times, just enjoying time together. He retired for good in 1990 when he sold his truck. He and Mrs. Dew enjoyed the beach and looked forward to Thanksgiving when the relatives would all gather at Holden Beach for a week. Mr. Dew will be missed by his family and friends. May he rest in honor and peace.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, June 18, 2012, at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home
. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 19, 2012, in Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home chapel, with Pastor Barnett from Cliffdale Communtiy Church officiating. Interment will follow in Hickory Grove Baptist Church cemetery in Bladenboro with full military honors.
