Obituary

Retired US Army SFC George Richard Hickman, Sr., 73, of Fayetteville, passed away Monday morning, August 19, 2013, in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, August 22, 2013, at 11 am in Jernigan Warren Chapel. The burial will follow at Cross Creek Cemetery with military honors. George, or "Richie" as he was known to family, was born November 4, 1939, in Rockbridge County, Virginia to the late George Earl Hickman and Edna Masters Hickman Brown. He entered the US Army at age 19 and retired 20 years later. Following the military, he worked for and then retired from the US Postal Service after 20 more years. He loved working with his hands, restoring antique furniture, being outdoors, bird-watching, spending time at the beach, cooking, or just telling his stories about the old times. He was a joy to be with and will be sorely missed. Mr. Hickman was preceded in death by his wife, Vivian Phillips Hickman; his eldest son, George Richard Hickman, Jr.; sisters, Doris H. Banisch Stone, Delores H. Fibbiani, Betty H. Armstrong, and Pamela Nuckols; and a brother, Thomas Q. Brown, Jr. He is survived by his children, Thomas Vern Hickman and wife Cyndi of Brandenburg, KY, Lesa Hickman Atkins and husband Gerald of Sanford, NC, Jenny Maloney Angel and husband Adam of Rocky Mt, NC, Claire Maloney McDonald and husband Jeff of Delaware, OH, Sharon Maloney English and husband Dana of Germantown, TN, and James Scott Maloney and wife Beth of Charlotte, NC; 16 grandchildren, Danielle Hickman, Freddie Rocco Hickman, Logan McDonald, Avery McDonald, Alyssa Angel, Megan Angel, Bryan Angel, Krista E. Maykowski, Austin English, Michael Maloney, Bobby Maloney, Kelly M. O'Malley, Charles Stinson, Jason Stinson, Michelle Stinson and Terri Stinson; 10 great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Francis Saum of Highland Springs, VA, Sarah Brooks of Mineral, VA, and Dianne Iszczenko of Beaverdam, VA. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 2 to 4 pm and 6 to 8 pm at Jernigan Warren Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, August 22, 2013, at 11 am in Jernigan Warren Chapel. The burial will follow at Cross Creek Cemetery with military honors. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 2 to 4 pm and 6 to 8 pm at Jernigan Warren Funeral Home.
