Obituary

FAYETTEVILLE - Mrs. Gertrude Nance Presnell, 87, of Fayetteville, died Friday, June 19, 2009, in Carrol S. Roberson Hospice Center in Fayetteville. In addition to her parents, Vera Harrelson Nance and Thomas Nance of Clarkton and Elizabethtown; her brother, Marvin Nance of Lumberton; and sister, Ethel Nance Watts of Fayetteville, Gertrude was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Lawrence Presnell, in 1994. Gertrude and Lawrence owned the Boulevard Golf Driving Range and the Par Three Golf in Fayetteville from the 1950s and 1960s. She was the ladies' golf champion at Highland Country Club numerous times during the 1950s to 1970s, as well as winning many ladies' amateur golf tournaments throughout North and South Carolina. Gertrude is survived by her daughter, Phyllis Petersen of Fayetteville; her son, Larry Presnell and his wife, Vickie Gilmore Presnell, of Raleigh; her grandchildren, Brian Petersen of Fayetteville, and Karen Petersen Axford and her husband, Chad Axford, of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and her great-granddaughters, Berklee Axford and Megan Presnell Stahl of Raleigh. A visitation with family and friends will be held Tuesday, June 23, 2009, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home, Ramsey Street, Fayetteville. A private family service will be held. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Carrol S. Roberson Hospice Center, 2431 Legion Road, Fayetteville, NC 28306; or to a charity of your choice.
