Obituary

Gladys McClure Goforth passed away on Friday, January 10, 2014, after a brief illness. She was born in Waycross, Georgia to Charles Thames and Pearl Culbreth McClure. She moved with her family, including six brothers and two sisters, from Waycross to White Oak, North Carolina. She graduated from White Oak High School. In 1942 she married June Haywood Goforth, then a US Marine. They moved to Fayetteville where together they raised their two children and enjoyed a loving and happy marriage until his death in 1991. While raising her family, she was active in school, church and community service. She worked and retired from both JC Penney Co., and Belk Hensdale as a Sales Associate and fashion model in the Belk fashion shows. She was a member of the Eastern Star and the White Shrine of Jerusalem, holding various offices and joining in their service to community as well. In 1998 she was presented with the Miriam Award by the White Shrine for her service over the years. During her husband's long association with the Masonic Order, she organized and hosted numerous events to support his many terms as Master and Past Master. Her dearest love was the First Presbyterian Church of Fayetteville. From the time she joined the church in the 1940's, she was active. She taught children's Sunday school classes as well as Bible school for many years, and was a member of the Chancel Choir for over 50 years, and participated in too many church events to mention. In 2006 she was honored with the Lifetime Award, presented by the Women of the Church for her many years of dedicated service. She was a beautiful, charming woman whose smile lit up the room. Her positive attitude toward life and trust in God led her to enjoy every day to its fullest. She was as loving and generous to strangers as she was to her family and friends. She is survived by her son, Charles Blackburn Goforth of Pinehurst, NC and daughter, Annette Raynor Goforth of Raleigh, NC, one sister, Myrtle McClure Packer of Fayetteville, NC, and one brother, Earl H. McClure and wife, MacVonne McClure of Norman, OK, along with her many much loved nieces and nephews. A service will be held on Thursday, January 16, 2014, at 11 am in First Presbyterian Church Chapel with Dr. Larry Toney presiding. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service, from 10 to 11am, in the Church Parlor. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions in her honor to the First Presbyterian Church, 102 Ann Street, Fayetteville NC 28301, the Airborne and Special Operations Museum Foundation, 100 Bragg Blvd., Fayetteville NC 28301 (www.asomf.org) or your favorite charity.
