Obituary

Rev. Hamond Leroy "Hap" Chandler, 78, 0f Fayetteville NC passed away on Thursday, December 9th 2010 in his home of 45 years. Hamond was born December 18th, 1931 to Mr. Elton L. Chandler and Mrs. Nelly M. Creighton. He was a proud veteran of the United States Airforce, an inspiring teacher in the Cumberland County School System and most importantly, a respected Reverend that uplifted the community through his Ministry and service work. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather who loved his family and church. He was a true friend and inspiration to everyone that he met and taught life lessons to many. He believed that the relationships between people were to be cherished. He was a great leader and communicator. Rev. Chandler attained a Masters Degree in Education from East Carolina University and attended the United States Army Infantry School. He was esteemed as one of the top marksman in the country, as he shot competitively for the National Rifle Team. Shortly after the loss of his daughter Karen, Hamond and his wife Marge founded the Karen Chandler Trust Fund; a non-profit organization that sought out families in the community afflicted by the devastations of cancer in hopes to aid in medical and living expenses. He accomplished many great things in this world, yet was still a humble man of God. A quote from his final sermon truly encompassed his attitude about life. "We must understand that what we have has come to us by God, and that we are stewards of all that we have. In short, we must relinquish our personal claims for all that is abundant in our lives. And, we must give ourselves to others." He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 59 years, Marjorie Chandler, his son and daughter Mike and Belinda, daughter and son-in-laws Nancy and Henry and his Grandchildren Shay, Kord, Kevin, Jessie and Leigh
