September 24, 1944 – July 28, 2021
Harriet B. Larson, 76, of Fayetteville, NC, passed away July 28, 2021, with her two sons by her side.
She was born to the late John Beach Bruner and Alma Ruth Dozier Bruner, September 24, 1944, in Dothan, Alabama. Preceded by her grandparents, Eddie Vesper Bruner & Ola Barefield Bruner, and Herbert Rupert Dozier & Hattie Jerkins Dozier of the Brannon Stand Community near Dothan, Alabama.
Harriet graduated from Ashford High School in 1962 as the class valedictorian and received degrees in History and English from Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama in 1966. In high school, Harriet was student council president, cheerleader captain, and a member of the quartet The Harmonettes – performing in churches and at school and local functions. In college, Harriet was a charter member of the Chi Omega sorority chapter at Samford University, Phi Alpha Thea Theta, and Kappa Delta Epsilon. She was featured in multiple newspaper articles in the Dothan Eagle and The Howard Crimson for her academic achievements, school leadership roles, community involvement, and as Miss Ashford 1962.
Harriet is survived by her sons: Steven M. Larson and his spouse Meg Huse Larson, of Hope Mills, NC; and James Bradley Larson and his spouse Beth Ann Wiedenheft, of Chapel Hill, NC. She has three grandchildren; Megan Brooke Larson, Jonathan Beach Larson, and Juniper Dean Larson. She taught English at Ashford High School and History & English at Horace Sisk High School, which is now a part of Fayetteville Technical Community College. She volunteered at Brentwood Elementary School from 1978 to 1984, assisting teachers and the PTA. Harriet also served as the Brentwood Elementary School PTA President from 1982 to 1984.
Harriet was a second mother to all of her sons' friends and the neighborhood children, welcoming each with love and a caring heart. She was a strong and amazing woman. And she often said her happiest childhood memories were of growing up on the family farm.
A ceremony honoring Harriet will be held at Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Dothan, Alabama and her burial will take place at Ashford City Cemetery in Ashford, Alabama on a date to be determined for all of her friends, classmates, and her family to attend.
