Obituary

Harry C. Collins, 81, of Fayetteville passed away Saturday, April 5, 2014 in his home after a lengthy illness. A graveside service will be held on Thursday, April 10, 2014 at 2 pm in Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery in Spring Lake with military honors. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 pm at Jernigan Warren. Harry was born in 1932 to Arthur and Mabel Collins in Meadville, PA. He served honorably in the US Navy during the Korean War. While on leave with a buddy in Swannanoa, NC he met his beloved wife Patricia (Jackie) Collins. The two were married for 59 years at his passing. Harry and Jackie were the proud parents of sons Rick, and wife Debbie Collins and Rob, and wife Sheri Collins all of Fayetteville. Harry, Jackie, Rick and Rob moved to Fayetteville in 1965 with his job as a sales representative for General Electric/Hotpoint Appliances. Furniture/appliance dealers and builders in Fayetteville and surrounding areas knew him as "Hotpoint Harry". He was well-known for his cooking classes when microwaves were first introduced and people were "not quite sure" what to do with them other than reheat leftovers. He was devoted to his GE dealers as they were to him. Through the years Harry and Jackie made Fayetteville their home and watched as their family grew through love and commitment. Grandsons Johnny, and wife Teresa Collins, Charlie, and wife Melinda Collins, Carson and Brodie Collins all loved spending time with Papa and will miss him greatly. As will great-grandchildren Emily, Alison, Brayden and Bentley. He was a big part of, and a great influence in all their lives as a patriarch, mentor and role model. Harry never met a stranger and was a natural born salesman. He retired from GE after 42 years of service. His family, friends and co-workers all knew he was generous to a fault. Whenever he "discovered" a new food or item he liked, he always bought extras so he could share with anyone he thought might like it. He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers William , Arthur Jr, Robert and Plummer Collins and sister Lois Coursen. He is survived by brother Alan, and wife Lucy Collins of Temple Terrace, FL. The family gives special thanks to Dr. Jorge Franco for extraordinary kindness and caring over the many years Harry was his patient. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Sandhills Veteran's Cemetery to help with the construction of the chapel. Donations should be sent to the Cumberland Community Foundation, P.O. Box 2345, Fayetteville, NC 28302. A graveside service will be held on Thursday, April 10, 2014 at 2 pm in Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery in Spring Lake with military honors. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 pm at Jernigan Warren.
