Obituary

Sergeant Major Harry Sass, US Army retired, 71, died Tuesday, November 28, 2006, at his residence at Lake Gaston, NC. Harry was born in Tiegenhof, Free State of Danzig, August 24, 1935. Harry emigrated to the United States of America in July 1956, working as journeyman in the building trade until his voluntary military draft in December 1958. After nearly 27 years of service in the United States Army, with Airborne duty and Special Forces units, also as Military Science Instructor in the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) on several colleges and universities, he retired in 1985 as Sergeant Major. Harry has studied psychology and sociology and has a Masters of Education degree from North Carolina State University. Funeral services are scheduled for Wednesday, December 6, 2006, 2:00 pm at JFK Chapel on Fort Bragg. The burial with full military honors will be held Tuesday, January 2, 2007, at 3:00 pm in Arlington National Cemetery. Harry is survived by his wife, Hedy Sass of Wilmington; a son, Marcus Sass of Wilmington; a daughter, Isabella Sass Schwenker, and her husband, Cliff, of Carolina Beach; Three grandsons, Sebastian, Nicholas, and Christopher; two sisters, Irmgard Schultz and Helga Fularczyk. The family will receive friends following the service at JFK Chapel.
