FAYETTEVILLE - Mrs. Hattie Mallard Odom, 95, of Fayetteville, died Friday, Feb. 19, 2010. Raised on a farm in Jones County, one of 11 children born to William Grover Mallard and Hattie Pearl Banks Mallard. Hattie was often relied upon to raise and discipline her siblings. She was fortunate to attend East Carolina Teachers College and received her diploma in home economics and education. She served as home demonstration agent in several eastern counties, following graduation. During World War II, she worked at Fort Bragg in support of the military, where she met Edward Gilbert Odom Jr. The two were married in 1945, and made Fayetteville their home. For 32 years, Hattie enjoyed a rewarding career as a teacher in the Cumberland County Schools system. She taught a wide variety of subjects and grade levels, but will be mostly remembered as an earth science teacher at Alexander Graham Jr. High School. Upon her retirement in 1978, Hattie continued to devote her life to the Fayetteville community, serving on numerous boards and organizations including, Pilot Club, AARP, Retired Teachers Association, SCAT and various others. She was an active and devoted member of Wesley Heights United Methodist Church for more than 60 years, where she served tirelessly in many capacities. Although she never met a stranger, her love for her family was first and foremost. She was a fixture at events involving her grandchildren including sporting events, beauty pageants, and horse back riding competitions, graduations and weddings. She was a special mother, grandmother, relative and friend who taught us the most important lesson of all and that is an unending love of Jesus and how everyday was a day that the Lord had made for us.
